Every June, the Knights of the Garter, are chosen by the Queen to honour those who have held public office, who have contributed in a particular way to national life or who have served her personally. The Queen (whose father George VI appointed her and her husband to the Order in 1947), as Sovereign of the Order, attends the service along with other members of the Royal family. This year, The Duchess of Cambridge with Queen Maxima of the Netherlands and Queen Letizia of Spain are supporting their husbands, who are members of the Order – William as a senior British royal, and King Willem-Alexander and King Felipe as Knights of the Garter.
