2020/2021 season of the Teatro Real

The Teatro Real opened the 2020/2021 season with "Un ballo in Maschera" by Giuseppe Verdi. Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) is an 1859 opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The piece is based on the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, who was shot during a masked ball in 1792, dying 13 days later from his wounds. Verdi composed the opera in the late 1850's. Un ballo in maschera will be offered in a production coming from the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and replicated in collaboration with the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville.
